Shamrock Hop: 50s Sock Hop Dance
We had a blast in March! Come back in Winter 2027 to purchase tickets, or join us for Harvest Hop in November.
What is Shamrock Hop?
Come join us for a 50s throwback at the Shamrock Hop Sock Hop Dance! Starting towards the end of WWII "sock hops," as they were called, may have begun as a student effort to raise money for the war, by holding a dance in the high school/college gymnasium or cafeteria. In order to protect the varnished floors, students were required to remove their shoes and would dance in their socks.
BYUSA Vintage Swing aims to preserve and teach vintage American dances and dance culture, so this March, we're bringing students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the excitement of the sock hops of the 1950s! Don't know how to dance? No worries! We'll be teaching era-style dance and playing music from the sock hop era (late 40s to mid 60s), so you can feel, and dance, like it's 1956. Fun surprises will be served...
"Be there or be square!"

Dress Code
We recommend wearing 50s-style clothing (think Grease), and specifically white socks—nobody danced at hops in anything but white socks back in the day. This is a spring themed dance, so expect there to be a lot of green.
As we are a BYU club, please follow the BYU Honor Code Dress Standards which can be found here, whether or not you are a BYU student (see important purchasing info below). Have fun with dressing up, but have clean fun!

IMPORTANT PURCHASING INFO
Because we are a BYU club, we are required by BYUSA to ensure that Shamrock Hop is open to current BYU students and their dates only (a date, girlfriend/boyfriend, spouse). To comply with this policy, the following ticket purchasing rules are in place:
- Singles Tickets can only be purchased by current BYU students.
- Couples Tickets can only be purchased by current BYU students, but the other person on the Couples Ticket (the date) does not have to be a BYU student.
- Only one ticket may be purchased per BYU student (i.e. only one Singles Ticket or one Couples Ticket per student)
Current BYU IDs of the purchasing party will be checked at the door, and entrance may be denied if you don't have it, so please have the purchasing party bring their BYU ID (BYU app ID is also accepted). Please contact vintageswing@byu.edu with questions or concerns.
Note: All participants must sign a waiver at the door before they can be admitted into the dance.
